Nova Scotia is Canada’s second smallest province in area, after Prince Edward Island. Nova Scotia is Canada’s second-most-densely populated province, after Prince Edward Island, with 17.4 inhabitants per square kilometre (45/sq mi). Nova Scotia is the second smallest of Canada’s ten provinces, with an area of 55,284 square kilometres (21,300 sq mi), including Cape Breton and another 3,800 coastal islands. It’s spectacular.Nova Scotia is one of Canada’s three maritime provinces and one of the four provinces that form Atlantic Canada. “It is truly phenomenal when the waves hit the big rocks, when the tide goes out you can see they are massive,” said Ms. The space loops around a central chamber that contains a large ensuite bathroom/dressing room, and culminates in a library/private media room on the forest side of the house.Īlmost every room has excellent views of the ocean, but to be sitting in bed looking at a raging storm is perhaps the best way to witness it. On the right of the door into the suite is an office space that could be converted to a bedroom, but to the left is a long bedroom with ocean views. Some primary suites are just a bedroom with a closet, but in this house, it’s truly a self-contained retreat. All across the back of the home is a connected walkout patio, with defined spaces for outdoor cooking and swimming in the long narrow lap pool. Passing through the second lantern (where laundry and powder room are tucked away) you get to the guest pod with three bedrooms and a large shared bathroom. The entry foyer is in the “lantern” on the right, between the pod on the end that holds the primary living suite and the large central pod with living and dining space with a kitchen on the forested side. “They are designed to almost disappear because of that small mullion on the steel window,” said Ms. “We had access to quality supplies, as opposed to Home Depot.” That shows up in things like stainless-steel prep areas in the kitchen with integrally welded sinks, commercial kitchen quality appliances, and the custom-built black-framed windows that dominate all the water-facing walls of the house. “We didn’t cheap out on anything,” said Mr. Her background shows up in the home in elements such as indirect lighting and elevated material choices. “The last thing I ever wanted it to do was look like a hotel interior,” she said. Like that ballroom, her home was also designed to be unique. Her firm does a lot of design for big hotel chains, and some of her favourite work was for Toronto’s venerable King Edward Hotel, including the refurbishment of the long-mothballed 17th-floor Crystal Ballroom. Moncur had never done the architectural drawings for a whole house before this (though she is back at it again for her next home, located more centrally for the daughters). The walls are mainly white, allowing the few accent colour walls to jump out, and the trim and doors are mainly black. Inside and out the couple focused on natural materials: Nova Scotia cedar planks and shake on the exterior and on the interior a mix of black basalt stone and wide-plank oak floors. In some ways, perhaps she should have seen it coming. We would go every summer until I was a teenager and didn’t want to do it any more,” Ms. “My mother was born and raised in Nova Scotia. Over the years there were summers and some Christmases spent on the ocean, but the daughters (fully grown with families of their own in Ontario and California) made it clear the rugged Atlantic coastline is just a little too far out of the way to make it a habit. Moncur, an interior designer with a long career of shaping spaces in the hotel and restaurant business. … They won’t come to Nova Scotia – they made that very clear,” said Ms. “Our three daughters have absolutely no interest in ever going there again. That’s part of the story of couple Robynne Moncur and Chris Dineley’s 6,000-square-foot seaside house on Nova Scotia’s south shore (about two hours from Halifax): They built it planning to retire there, but as it turns out, if they move in full-time it could be a lonely outpost for the family. Don’t lose hope it will take a bit of time.

What’s new and improved in JetBrains 2022.3? JetBrains has announced the release of their 2022.3 updates to their developer tool product range. It also has useful auto-off timers from 30 to 90 minutes, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for private listening. This is very handy as it means you can place it where you like in a room without needing to think of where a power outlet is. It’s close to the LectroFan Evo in maximum volume, reaching over 70 decibels when I tested it with a decibel meter.Ī convenient feature is the internal rechargeable battery, which takes only two hours to fully charge and lasts over eight hours. The speaker is clear and loud if you need it to be, with surprisingly good bass quality for a white noise machine. The D3 Pro has clearly labeled category buttons, making it faster to cycle through the sounds and find the one you want. There are also a few for kids, such as a lullaby, music box, and heartbeat. There are 29 sound options to choose from, including 15 nature/relaxing sounds, seven types of white noise, and seven fan sounds.Īs well as having some relaxing deep pink and brown noise, there are favorites like rain, sea waves, and birds. The Dreamegg D3 Pro is an excellent all-rounder white noise machine. But it makes up for that with its high-quality sounds, loud maximum volume, and reliable sound masking.įind out more in my LectroFan Evo review. It currently costs just under $60 in the US and just under £60 in the UK, so it’s not in the budget white noise machine category. It also needs to be plugged in to work, with no internal battery. One potential downside is that it lacks nature sounds, with only two ocean surf sounds. It also has useful auto-off timers and a minimalist, compact design for easy transport. Physically, the LectroFan Evo is designed with user-friendliness in mind, with large enough buttons to find in the dark and a headphone jack for private listening. Furthermore, the sounds are dynamically generated, which creates a continuous, non-looping noise. The incremental volume range means you can listen to it quietly, or match higher levels of external noise like traffic or loud music when you want to sleep, study, or work. I measured it at 77 decibels on a white noise setting from a meter away. The sound quality of the speaker is excellent, and it’s the loudest white noise machine I’ll be discussing in this article. Pink and brown noise are also much more relaxing to listen to for extended periods of time in my experience. And as well as the usual intense white noise, there’s deeper pink and brown noise that block lower-frequency ambient sounds well. It has a superb range of fan sounds, from typical household fans to some very industrial-sounding fans. What I especially like about the Evo is that it has a wide spectrum of 22 white noise and fan variations, which gives you plenty of options for masking external noise when you sleep, work, or study. The LectroFan Evo is a robust and effective white noise machine that blocks out disruptive noise very well, thanks to its powerful speaker and excellent sounds. The best white noise machine overall, and the loudest option for adults. However, the manufacturers may change design details in the future. Please note that all of the photos are my own, and the exact white noise machines I used. In this review, I’ll be sharing my current top picks, from compact and portable models to larger machines with more powerful speakers. Over the past decade, I’ve used a wide range of white noise machines, and have published more than 25 videos about white noise machines here on my website and my YouTube channel, so I have a clear idea of how the soundtracks, speakers, and features compare. Using a white noise machine works well if you’re happy to to mask annoying noise with a constant sound that you find relaxing to listen to. Other than improving the soundproofing of your room, some effective options include earplugs, headphones, speakers, and white noise machines. If you’re frequently disturbed by unwanted noise you can’t control, there are various ways to reduce how much of the noise you actually hear. A novel practice presented in this article features clinical cases introducing this technique as it is applied to the lactating breast, conclusively distinguishing normal from abnormal and illustrating the efficacy and added diagnostic value of this approach. Improvements in dermoscopy involving polarization obviate the need for full contact with the examined surface, thereby providing anatomical detail in three dimensions. The dermatoscope is a useful tool, enlarging and illuminating an area of epidermis to obtain an optimal image. Traditional direct inspection is clearly inadequate for this task. Examination of the superficial breast plays a key role in accurate diagnosis. To overcome these difficulties, timely diagnosis is crucial to effectively treat the underlying pathology and permit resumption of breastfeeding. Many women, however, experience nipple pain while breastfeeding, leading to premature cessation of nursing. It is well recognized that breastmilk provides optimal nutrition and immunological protection for infants. "Seeing Is Believing": Dermatoscope Facilitated Breast Examination of the Breastfeeding Woman with Nipple Pain. Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy revealed spindle cell proliferation consistent with leiomyoma of the nipple A dynamic MRI study showed a rim-enhancing oval mass with delayed persistent enhancement. MRI showed an oval mass with circumscribed margins that appeared as an intermediate signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a leiomyoma of the nipple examined by MRI. This mass was evaluated by mammography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). She came to our hospital complaining of a recently enlarged nipple with discharge and erosion in the region of the left nipple-areolar complex. We report an unusual case of leiomyoma of the nipple in a 32-year-old woman in whom the diagnosis was made by ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy. Leiomyoma of the nipple is a rare, benign, non-epithelial tumor that is thought to arise from smooth muscle fibers in the subareolar tissue of the breast. The aesthetics of type is both more noticeable than ever, yet, perhaps, less considered. If typeface history has demonstrated anything, it’s that typography will continue to evolve to meet the needs of designers, new formats, and readers. We live in an era in which we can change the look of a document on a computer screen with a few button clicks. Then again, web fonts were technically possible for more than a decade before they were widely adopted. While the technology to do this has been around for a few years, it hasn’t been widely adopted-yet. These fonts allow designers to use multiple colors within a single glyph. One emerging technology to watch is the development of color fonts, within the OpenType-SVG format. Some areas of design change and evolve quickly, but typography has been slower to evolve over the centuries. While many typefaces focus on Latin character sets, there are other Western languages (such as Greek and Cyrillic) that should be more widely included as standard in font files. One area where many typefaces are still lacking is global language coverage. Variable fonts have had a significant impact on digital type design, but there’s still room for new trends and technologies to emerge in the future. In 1974, the first outline (vector) fonts were developed, which resulted in better readability at the same time as reducing file sizes.Įvolution of Typography: What the Future Holds Early digital fonts were bitmaps, which resulted in less-than-ideal readability at small sizes. The first digital typeface-Digi Grotesk-was designed by Rudolf Hell in 1968. Other minimalist typefaces were developed in the 20th century, including Futura (developed by Paul Renner) and Optima (developed by Hermann Zapf). In 1957, Max Miedinger designed Helvetica, arguably the most iconic typeface of the 20th century. He created iconic fonts that are still in use, including Copperplate Gothic and Goudy Old Style (based on Jenson’s Old Style typefaces). The first full-time type designer was Frederic Goudy, who got his start in the 1920s. The 20th century brought still more important developments in typeface history. The next significant development in sans serif type came 100 years later when Edward Johnston designed the iconic typeface for the London Underground-still in use today. During the early 1800s, Egyptomania took much of the Western world by storm, and both typography and design took cues from Ancient Egyptian art and its blocky lettering style. Sans serif type was influenced by block lettering that was commonly used in classical antiquity, in which serifs were minimal or missing entirely. They’re best suited for headlines and display uses, though at high resolutions, they can be suitable for body copy. The strokes on the “3” in Bodoni are both terminated with balls, while only the upper stroke is terminated with a ball in Didot.īecause of the extent of contrast between thin and thick strokes in modern serifs like Didot and Bodoni, they’re not the most readable typefaces at smaller sizes. For example, the uppercase J in Bodoni extends below the baseline, while in Didot it sits on the baseline. There are some distinct differences between the two fonts, mostly in the appearance and placement of particular letterforms. At first glance, the typefaces are very similar in appearance and showcased the quality of the metal-casting work done by the respective companies, as thinner strokes required much better craftsmanship. In the 1780s, two type designers-Firmin Didot in France and Giambattista Bodoni in Italy-created modern serifs with extreme contrast between strokes. The downside was that it limited the amount of text that could fit on a single page, creating longer books that required more time to set up. Gutenberg’s letterforms were based on the Blackletter calligraphy that was used to write manuscripts. While arranging the letters for each page could take an entire day, the page could then be printed as many times as necessary from that single day’s work. He drew on movable type used in East Asia and screw-type presses being used by farmers in Europe to devise the idea for the first printing press.īecause Gutenberg was a goldsmith, he was able to create durable letter blocks that could be used over and over again. Gutenberg recognized that being able to mass-produce books quickly and cheaply was a lucrative prospect. Typeface history has largely been influenced by the availability of technology throughout the centuries, starting with Gutenberg’s press and continuing through digital typography advancements by designers in the 20th and 21st centuries. They were generally reserved for the elite, though growing literacy among the middle class increased their demand. However, before the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century, books were written by hand. It’s easy to take books and other printed material for granted.
